The Film Audition
Arrive early for your film
casting call. Pick up a copy
of the sides if you have not already done so. These are
usually 1 to 2 pages of the screenplay that you will be
using to audition from. The scene you are given is deliberately
chosen to test your abilities and over all fit for the role.
The Casting Director or Director may also tell you a little
bit about the character before you read for your film audition.
This is to fill you in about the character and the scene
as well that you are reading from. Usually the first read
is not directed. The director may tell you how they want
to the character to speak or a line to be spoken and have
you read a second time.
You will begin the film
audition slating for the camera. This means
that before you start, you give your name, age, the role
you are auditioning for, phone numbers, agency info, and
any other contact info. Do your read and wait a few minutes
before leaving the room. The Director may want you to read
again. If not, do not stay long, say goodbyes and sign out.
You may be called back which is a second round of reads
and casting calls. Usually these are more detailed and can
be with other actors as well. Some actors have been called
back many times to perform with different actors or in front
of other key decision makers. Be patient, it is all part
of the
film casting and audition process. “The
hardest thing about movie acting is that if you're playing
a character who changes within the movie, you've got to
do that, but you've got to do it out of sequence, because
we never have gotten to shoot in sequence, and that's really,
really tough.” John Sayles
